about camille

Camille likes tools, and firmly believes that tulle too has its place in the world. That sums up the essence of Camille Hempel Design - in a word - tough, and elegant. She's been working at this jewelry craft since the 90's...from her apprenticeship at the Jewelers' Workshop - a custom design institution in Madison, WI - during and after college at the UW,  then working for a few designers and in many production houses in NYC's jewelry district, to eventually having her own storefront workshop + showroom in Williamsburg, Bkln (2005-12).

Overall Camille's work has an immediacy and an au courant appeal. Her designs have a familiar classic vibe, with freshness. AND, she did not forget about joy and whimsy. Camille's jewelry is made in small batches or as inspired one-of-a-kinds, imbued with the energy of intention. They are vehicles of expression, to step out boldly and confidently, in this time to search for true connection.

Camille's design emphasis has always been on the ring form, being a lover of hands, all types of hands. In exploring comfort and wearability over the decades, she has engineered her trademark Armor Rings to a sublime level. With their moving parts and articulation, these reflective shields are her signature. Despite the "engineering", hers is a craft exploration, and it has been said that you can see the hand in her work.

For all her passion with the making and designing, ultimately it is about connecting the work to those who wear it best. People who gravitate toward Camille Hempel Design view jewelry as personal statement rather than accessory. She cherishes the relationships that have been forged over the years, with clients that have a strong sense of style and an open mind. If you are more about self-expression than following the season's trends, Camille's vibe might resonate.

As of late, Camille is taking time to slow the pace, to be present for what the world needs now, reflecting and looking in both directions, gauging the pulse of this new era. She is considering output vs. the vast potential that lies in her archive, for up-cycling and recycling. When not actively expanding consciousness horizons and sharing book titles with anyone who will listen, Camille is further exploring embodiments of time, love, and personal armor from her studio in Minneapolis.
